The Town of Čazma Ispis

panorama_caz.jpgThe town of Čazma is located in the North-West of Croatia. It includes thirty-six villages and the last census has shown that it counts 8895 inhabitants. It’s a gentle landscape, but it could satisfy anybody’s taste because it has various geographic characteristics – you can see the last spurs of Moslavačka gora turning into fertile plains here. The town itself has 2878 inhabitants and it is administrative, cultural and economic centre of that part of Bjelovar-Bilogora county.

Čazma has rich history and it is among the oldest towns in Croatia. It was mentioned at the beginning of 11th century. Kaptol was founded there at the time and Herceg Koloman, King Bela The Forth’s brother, goverend Croatia from there. At the end of 19th century Čazma was the centre of local government. The year 1226 is celebrated as the year of the founding of the town of Čazma. Bishop Stjepan II Babonić established a parish then on the banks of Česma, he built a Dominican monastery and the famous church of St. Mary Magdalene.

The parish church from 1226 is the only monument kept from the earliest written history of Čazma. It’s a unique example of Romanesque architecture in North Croatia and the experts say it is as important as the Zagreb cathedral. The organ from the same church dates from 1767 and it is one of the prettiest examples kept. It has a special place in Croatian cultural heritage. Čazma still shows great attention to cultural events. The Town museum has its gallery and the constant archaeological and athnographic exhibition showing the historical and cultural development of north-western Moslavina. Čazma is proud of its famous representatives so its Cultural centre carries the name of Slavko Kolar. The town also has two academic painters’ galleries – Aleksandar Marks’, cartoon film drawer, and Anton Cetin’s. Another academic painter, Franjo Matešin, has its own gallery in the nearby village Bojana. Cultural event worth mentioning is “Zapovijed pod lipom” organised by cultural club “Sloga” from Miklouš, a club which nurtures the original folklore of Moslavina.

Čazma offers various sport fields, from tennis, volleyball, football to indoor-football, badminton or table-tennis. Čazma is also the finish line of Supermarathon from Zagreb’s to Čazma’s Kaptol. It is a 60 kilometers long race, the longest in Croatia, and it has a 30-year old tradition.

Rivers Česma and Glogovnica are rich in fish and are very interesting to recreational anglers.

There are also many rich hunting grounds which offer trophy roe-deer and individual or collective hunting of wild boar.

salaj_lampice.jpgČazma has had a recognizable tourist landmark for the last couple of years. Family Salaj from Grabovnica invested a lot of effort into decorating their house and garden and the Croatian tourist association recognized that effort and gave them support. That beautiful house and garden have been visited by 20 thousand visitors in a year and it was chosen as the prettiest in the continental part of Croatia two times. Their numerous Christmas lights are famous all over Croatia and abroad as well.
